Taking over a team this week, Any advise?

I have been allowed to take over an abandoned team this week, team seems to have a few stars and a bunch of holes (i.e... guys I have never heard of), yet it managed to win some games with a bunch of Street Free Agents in the starting lineup. any advice you all are willing to toss my way would be appreciated.
Also, I am completely brand new to the game, take that into account.

Check the stats on your team and find out who has been successful and who hasn't. This will be more difficult on defense as the stats are a little more limited so identifying weaknesses may take a bit more digging. I recommend looking at the play-by-play for your previous games as well to figure what was working, what wasn't, and what was luck. That should at least get you started and give you an idea of what to expect. You can also look at anyone else's games too and see what's worked and what hasn't for them. Check out their rosters too so you can get an idea of why something worked or didn't. Good luck and have fun!
